Mayor Lydia Lavelle proclaimed June as Immigrant Heritage Month 2020 in Carrboro at the Town Council’s meeting of Thursday, June 18.
This was also the day that the Supreme Court blocked the attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an Obama-era program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.
“While today’s United States Supreme Court decision, Dept. of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of Southern California, puts DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) back into effect for now, we recognize that there is still much continued legal work and advocacy ahead for our immigrant community,” Mayor Lavelle stated in the proclamation.
The proclamation encourages all residents to respect and honor the many contributions that immigrants have made in our community and our nation.
