Advisory Board Appointments
The Council postponed appointments to advisory boards until the applicant pool includes Black residents of Carrboro.
Mural Update
The Council expressed an interest in seeing anti-racism messages and public art displayed in prominent, visible locations including buildings and along the NC Hwy 54 Ramp at Jones Ferry Road. The Council called for an accelerated schedule on the project. It may also continue to consider various options such as painting the Race and Equity logo on the Town Hall parking lot and street murals.
Consideration of Changing the Town’s Namesake
The Council discussed the community’s input for two options – to change the namesake to another person named Carr or to change the Carrboro town name. Council requested a logistical and cost breakdown of the options, and to gather feedback from the local business community on the options.
Discussion of Reparations Including the Disproportionality of Trees in BIPOC Neighborhoods
The Council requested that a work session be scheduled sometime in fall for a full exploration of reparations for wealth and opportunity gaps due to historical racism and discrimination. They discussed various paths taken by other municipalities to create investments in programs and services for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.
