The Carrboro Town Council met virtually Tuesday, Jan. 26, and took the following actions:
- Proclamation Honoring Retiring Police Chief Walter Horton: The Council offered thanks and appreciation to Chief Horton for his 27-year career with the Town of Carrboro; for the leadership, service, and protection the Town has received from him during this time; and best wishes for many years of joy in retirement. - A Request to Amend the Unpaved Roads Upgrades Capital Improvement Project Ordinance: The Council authorized the use of additional funds for the Roberts Street Improvement Project.
- CDBG-CV Grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce: The Council authorized the Town Manager to accept the award of a Community Development Block Grant - Coronavirus from the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The grant of $900,000 will fund the Emergency Housing Assistance Program, allowing the Town to continue to respond effectively to meet critical needs of Carrboro families.. - Affordable Housing Advisory Commission Funding Recommendations: The Council approved recommended funding for a nonprofit affordable housing application to the Affordable Housing Special Revenue Fund. The amount of $40,500 was approved for the Alliance for AIDS Services – Carolina. The funds will support the rehabilitation of the Orange Community Residence (OCR) house, which has been vacant since 2016 and is located at 1700 N Greensboro St. The grant will support seven single-resident units of permanent supportive housing, an intervention which provides housing with case management and supportive services for people with disabilities and who may experience chronic homelessness.
- Affordable Housing Update: The Council received an update on the Town’s affordable housing activities.
- East Main Street Restriping Project: The Council received an update on the pavement marking plans and approved an increase to the existing contract for signal changes.
- Presentation of Orange County Food Council Report: The Council received a presentation on the activities of the Orange County Food Council’s activities.
- Information on Text Amendments: The Council received information on a series of amendments to the Land Use Ordinance to conform with new G.S. Chapter 160D regulations.
- Remote Legislative Delegation Meeting and Adoption of Legislative Priorities: The Town Council discussed their interest in scheduling a virtual legislative delegation meeting and adopted legislative priorities for the upcoming session of the NC General Assembly.
- Public Hearings: The Council set public hearing dates for Feb. 23.
